What does the Golden Rule mean to you? There are various versions and interpretations of the Golden Rule, but I believe the version found in the Bible in Matthew is best. It says: “So in everything, do to others what you would have them do to you, for this sums up the Law and the Prophets”. I like this version because it requires that you DO something first. I have found that frequently when you initiate the act of treating others as you would like to be treated, the benefit is as equally positive for you as it is for the person receiving the treatment.
It has also become clearer to me over the years that we ALL struggle in life, feel insignificant, and deal with our own set of issues every day. Bottom line – I think most of us will agree, we all have bad days, and a person’s attitude can be greatly affected by what they are struggling with in their lives, especially if it is something serious. I guess because I have broadened my view, i.e., opened my eyes, now when I encounter someone who appears to be having a “bad day ”, I try to think about them first and make the situation better. I will try to make direct eye contact and express a sincere, hello, thank you, or initiate a short conversation. Does it always work? NO, but oh well, that’s life and you can choose to be part of a positive solution and feel better about it in the process or to let it ruin your day. I choose the former and believe that when you act in this way, you attract that same vibe you are giving out. I also believe that kind of vibe comes back to you and does so many times when YOU need it most. The side benefit is you may never know the ripple effect those acts of kindness have, but they are there. There is a commercial that you might have seen by an insurance company that shows people doing random acts of kindness for other people and the effect it produces…in case you have not seen it you can click here.
Do you want to try something on your own? The next time you make a purchase at a convenience store or fast food restaurant, actually make eye contact with the person behind the counter and say something nice. You will be amazed at the response. Now maybe where you live, you take the time to talk to people and what I’m explaining sounds strange. But, I live in the Chicagoland area where everyone is usually in a hurry. Now, when I encounter a clerk and actually take the time to do this, first their initial reaction is puzzlement…like “is this guy actually recognizing that I exist?” and then usually a smile and a genuine exchange.
I found this video online. It is a real life story about applying “The Golden Rule”. It inspired me and I hope it will inspire you. I think we can all learn from the young man’s act of kindness at the end of this video clip and apply his philosophy to our own situations in life.
